When a staff members name has a green icon next to it they are "active" and you are able to communicate with them directly.

 When there is a yellow icon they are "unavailable" and away from their system but, you are still capable of leaving a message.

 The last indicator would be a black icon which would indicate the staff member is "presently inactive" and you are unable to send an instant message.

Also if your internet connection is slower than a 128 kb (ISDN) the status of the names may take a little longer to show than on faster internet connections.
